I think half of it is his 'media' persona. I've heard him interviewed a few times, going back to 'Lily' days, and he sounds pretty genuine and concerned.
I automatically switch off Jeremy Vine and Elaine Page though.

I'm sure you are right, and I guess lots of people must like him.

Nicky Campbell is my favorite hate, that whining false pious concerned laid on voice that is very similar to the folks that used to present the religious likes of....."Thought for the day", which usually ended with the punchline "But what would Jesus say?"
