On Tuesday the 25th of September 2018, Peter Torry G3SMT set a new IARU Region 1 tropo record on 144 MHz when he worked D4Z in the Cape Islands Island off the coast of Africa.
The distance was a remarkable 4431 kms which breaks the previous record of 4163 kms which was set by Mark Turner EI3KD only a few weeks previously.
Some of the signals on 144 MHz from Cape Verde Islands have been reported to be very strong and there is a distinct possibility that a new record contact to Northern Ireland or Scotland may be possible in the foreseeable future.

Re: G3SMT Peter breaks record.
That is brilliant news, it opens up the debate that we need to try a trans-Atlantic experiment, this was attempted a few years back but failed.
I know folk slag off FT8 but having an FT8 low power beacon on 24/7 beaming west would be a brilliant tool.

Re: G3SMT Peter breaks record.
Yes it would Rob.
Can only be a matter of time, with the right equipment and conditions, trans-Atlantic should be cracked!
John.
