Getting back on 3cm

Unread post by G0DJA »

I dug out the Khune 3cm to 70cm converter box, connected a 3dB gain horn and a GPSDO that provides a 10MHz discipline to the LO, and plugged in a coaxial cable into my TS2000X tuned to 70cm.

After messing about with the set up, I'm now hearing a local beacon, just 46km away, but off some sort of back scatter. That means that, against what you might think is logical, I'm pointing the antenna in the opposite direction to where the beacon is located.

There's enough back scatter from 'something' that there is enough signal to be able to see a trace on SpectrumLabs and hear the signal and identify the callsign by ear as well.

I'm very pleased as I'd disconnected all my 3cm gear and given up on the band, other than I knew that I should be able to hear GB3FNY from some sort of back scatter, as I'd heard their original, personal, beacon using the same system back in 2011.
