Solder is EXPENSIVE

Unread post by Sangoma »

In 1978, a box containing 6 X 3kg rolls of solder fell off a post office truck as it was passing.

On the last little bit of the last roll, and bought some more.

Nearly £17 for a 500g roll !

Yep it has risen somewhat in value of late.
Hope you are still using old style "leaded" solder, I can't abide that lead free rubbish! :D
I don't know why, I just don't get on with it.
I bought quite a few rolls of decent "Ersin Multicore" branded fluxed leaded solder quite a few years ago now, it was relatively cheap back then, a mixture of diameters some 1.5 mm the others 0.7 mm, on my last roll currently, but recently found a source to replace it with when it finally runs out, with good the old 60/40 fluxed mix, but it ain't cheap these days for sure, prices quotes for 500 grams roll very similar to yours. ;)
Incidentally has anyone ever wondered how they produce resin cored solder?
The old Ersin stuff always announced its "five cores of resin" build.
I did often wonder how they made it, until one day I happened to watch one of those "How do they do it" TV programs.
Basically they cast a large round ingot of lead/tin mix with the the pattern of holes throughout it to carry the resin.
They then put molten resin into the holes within the ingot and let it set.
Then it's passed through a series of ever decreasing semi circular indented rollers, which stretch/roll the stuff to whatever diameter they require, not unlike making sticks of Blackpool Rock with the word "Blackpool" written through them! :D

Yes, it was all Ersin Multicore.
Never used anything else.

I bought a little of that lead free crap a few years back, and it was terrible.

Besides, it doesn't taste as nice when you chew it
