OK so not everyone's cuppa char but I, personally, don't mind a wee bit of contesting!
My local club, Cockenzie & Port Seton ARC, are very successful at putting a multi station on the air with the call GM2T and I enter a few when I'm not on shift with my own contest call MM1T
CQWW, for instance, is 48hrs of beer, pizza, barbecue, beer, chinese munchies, maybe some beer a whole load of laddish daft behaviour and of course some radio .... oh and did I mention beer!
Of course I can't speak for others however my aim is to beat myself as I'm never going to compete with the 5k+Optibeam chappies with my 100w and wires so every contest I enter I simply look to better my previous score.
It's a fairly good way of putting a few extra dxcc's into your log as well that, maybe, otherwise not get in!
Good company, good crack, beer & radio ..... what's not to like
